| DESCRIPTION | Leadership is a key factor in the success and innovation of public, non-profit, and governmental organisations. Beyond achieving results, modern leaders must demonstrate adaptability, ethical judgement, and responsiveness to complex societal and global challenges. This study-unit introduces students to leadership theory and practice in public affairs and non-profit organisations. It explores public versus private leadership, highlighting both historical and emerging models, and examines how globalisation, digital governance, climate change, and social diversity shape the expectations and roles of leaders. Students will study the personal attributes and behaviours of effective leaders, the influence of organisational structures and policy environments on decision-making, and the contingencies that affect leadership outcomes. The study-unit also considers how public institutions and civil society organisations develop leaders, uphold accountability, and promote ethical, inclusive, and sustainable leadership practices. Through a mix of theory and practical examples, students will gain the skills to critically analyse leadership challenges and understand the evolving role of leaders in shaping society. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - Understand leadership theories and models in public, non-profit, and civil society organisations; - Analyse the differences between leadership in public, private, and non-governmental contexts; - Examine how globalisation, digitalisation, climate change, and social diversity influence leadership roles and expectations; - Explore the personal attributes, behaviours, and ethical responsibilities of effective leaders; - Reflect on inclusive, accountable, and socially responsible leadership in shaping societal outcomes. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain key leadership theories, models, and approaches in public, non-profit, and civil society organisations; - Distinguish between leadership practices in public, private, and non-governmental contexts; - Identify the personal attributes, behaviours, and ethical responsibilities of effective leaders; - Understand how organisational structures, policy environments, and external factors shape leadership decisions and outcomes; - Appreciate the role of inclusive, accountable, and socially responsible leadership in influencing society. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically analyse leadership challenges and evaluate leadership approaches in real-world public and non-profit contexts; - Apply leadership theories and frameworks to practical scenarios; - Communicate ideas on leadership effectively through presentations and group discussions; - Collaborate with peers to analyse leadership issues, integrating diverse perspectives. |
